Wrapping Things Up

Wrapping Things Up

I was at Barnes and Noble the other day, and my companion and I noticed Christmas products already available. At the time of this writing, Halloween hasn’t even happened yet! It seems too soon to be seeing Christmas items! But, the reality is that Christmas is only a couple of months away. This year is quickly coming to an end, and it is time to begin to look ahead to 2017; its possibilities and its opportunities.
Here in this last quarter of the year, I like to do some thinking about what has happened in this year. What has gone well? What was difficult? What would I like to be different in the new year? It is a taking stock effort that allows me to celebrate the accomplishments of the year and to begin to consider what my goals will be for the next year. I also get to begin to ‘wrap up’ the last few months.
Household tasks include winterizing. Plants will be brought in, lawn furniture put away or covered, holiday decorations come out, and Christmas preparations get underway. I make a shopping list, begin to buy gifts, and get the gifts wrapped. It occurs to me now that these gifts are more than things to give my loved ones; they are gifts TO my heart.
As I wrap each gift, I know that I am grateful for the love of the person that will receive it. I know that the true meaning of this season is love, that Jesus was born to teach us love, and that we are to love one another. This season I can consider the gifts I’ve received throughout the year: the friendships I’ve enjoyed, the work that I love to do, and the comfort and security of my family and home. I can also consider the gifts that are still ahead and ready to be discovered and enjoyed.
My wish for each and every one of you is that you have many gifts to unwrap this season –gifts of friendship, love, laughter and joy. May you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Love,
Rev. Sharon
